The Gwalarn movement (north-west in French) was one of the most innovative pillars of Breton literary life between 1925 and 1944. The founder and director of the magazine, Roparz Hemon, and his close team, Youenn Drezen, Abeozen (Fañch Elies), Gwilherm Berthou Kerverziou, dreamed of shaking up the content and form of publishing in Breton.
Like all movements founded by young daredevils, this adventure contained an element of utopia, a desire to wipe the slate clean of the past. Above all, it carried the project of bringing Breton literature into line with European and global standards…
In this special issue of Istor Breizh, we approach Gwalarn through two distinct aspects. First, a literary perspective. What does the movement represent from the 1920s to today? Has it truly been innovative? How? What has been and what is its influence?
Then we will place it within the political history: what happened during the Second World War? At the Liberation, some of the Gwalarnists were troubled for collaborating with the occupier. A century after the first issue in 1925, it is undeniable that the literary movement has transmitted a rich heritage for the life of the mind in Brittany.
