The Koun Breizh association presented its endowment fund "Glad – Heritage of Brittany" on Saturday, November 7, at Ti ar Vro in Vannes. Its president, Yvon Ollivier, aims to mobilize donations, bequests, and corporate sponsorship to support the heritage, culture, and languages of Brittany, across the five departments.
"Let the money of the Bretons stay in Brittany": this phrase summarizes the ambition expressed by Yvon Ollivier during this first public presentation. The association, which has itself benefited from a significant legacy, now wishes to encourage broader mobilization to fund initiatives of general interest. According to its president, Glad is already established and has its initial endowment.
The fund is sponsored by singer Gilles Servat and sailors Anne Quéméré and Eugène Riguidel. The latter two were present in Vannes. Held back by mobility issues, Gilles Servat announced support via video.
***A general fund for the five departments
From megaliths to chapels, from cultural creation to language transmission, Glad claims a wide field of action. Yvon Ollivier presents it as a complementary tool to funds dedicated to specific areas, such as those of Diwan or Kenleur. It can both carry out its own operations and support those of other organizations.
Partnership with local associations occupies a central place in this approach. The goal is to finance or co-finance concrete projects, relying on volunteers who know the places and their needs. The president has also set a requirement: to frame partnerships within a Brittany of five departments.
Koun Breizh also aims to play an incubator role, preparing sufficiently solid projects to propose to local authorities and seek co-funding. Among the initiatives mentioned is a sculptural ensemble created by Marc Simon, focusing on Breton memory and resilience, as well as a film project with Olivier Caillebot.
***An ambition over ten to twenty years
To gather the necessary resources, Glad relies on individuals, but also on companies willing to support Breton heritage and to make this commitment known. Yvon Ollivier invited supporters to become intermediaries with future donors and patrons, emphasizing the importance of personal relationships.
The president claims a volunteer operation and a long-term approach: "We will see in ten, twenty years if it has worked." Promises of donations have already been received, he indicated. The challenge now is for the Bretons to take ownership of this new tool for transmission between generations.
A daily struggle
The creation of Glad extends the commitments of Koun Breizh. The association has notably mobilized in the case of the destruction of a megalithic site in Carnac to allow the construction of a DIY store More recently, it intervened in Plouzané to contest the replacement of the Breton name of the Coat-Edern school with that of Rosa Bonheur. As early as 2024, Koun Breizh had reached out to UNESCO to request the preservation of Breton toponymy, which it considers threatened by addressing operations related to the 3DS law.
