The communication regarding the launch of the consultation of Bretons by the Brittany region is centered around the phrase "everything is good in Breton!" which brings to mind the well-known saying "everything is good in the pig!" Koun Breizh cannot accept this association of ideas and asks Loig Chenais-Girard to remove this mention that reminds us of the latent racism we have endured in history. However, in self-deprecation, this association does not make us laugh.
For years, Koun Breizh has been striving to combat all forms of disdain associated with Breton identity that are carried by old nursery rhymes and outdated associations.
This ordinary racism that we have endured throughout history can still be found here and there, contributing to this long-internalized negative identity that persists in the reservations of some when it comes to considering autonomy.
We were dismayed to learn that Loig Chesnais-Girard has launched his communication on the participatory call to Bretons under the angle "everything is good in Breton!"
We Bretons do not understand how the political leader of the Brittany region can associate "Breton" and "pig" in his official communication to address Bretons.
Must the communicators of Loig Chesnais-Girard be so detached from Breton reality and our history to deliberately associate "everything is good in Breton" with the famous "everything is good in the pig!"
The racism we have endured throughout history is deeply ingrained. It resists and can still be found here and there, merely through the use of words and associations.
Should we remind the communicators of Loig Chesnais-Girard that the association of "Breton" and "pig" has been the most used to spread disdain for our language and culture? The famous nursery rhyme "potatoes for the pigs and peels for the Bretons" that children sang in the schoolyard?
Not so long ago, an auctioneer could sell an engraving showing a Breton farmer and a pig eating from the same trough.
Even in the form of self-deprecation, this intended association between Breton and pig does not sit well. It does not make us laugh!
We want to believe that this is a gross communication error made by people who are unaware of the territory in which they operate.
While we welcome the initiative to consult Bretons, we urgently ask the President of the Brittany region to modify his communication campaign and remove the mention "everything is good in Breton!"
We can no longer address Bretons from a perspective of disdain!
